Cecile and I met Klaus and Zorana in Serbia for New
Years 2003. In the course of the week, we saw the highlights of
Novi Sad (where Zorana's family is from), Belgrade and Zrenjanin.
Compared to the year before, basic services in Serbia, like power,
water, communications and banking had really improved. I didn't
have time to do any serious research, but the economy "felt"
closer to Hungary's than Russia's, which is pretty good progress
in a year.
There is still evidence of political problems stemming from a strong
black economy (rumours of a powerful mafia presence, and of course,
the assassination this year of the Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.)
But the situation overall is definitely getting better. It was a
fun week and I'm looking forward to going back again. |

We crossed Belgrade several times, finding places to eat and seeing
the sights. It's a beautiful Western city, but there is still some
bomb damage from the NATO attacks of 1999, notably the Ministry of
Defence building and the Chinese Embassy (which the Americans claim
to have hit by accident). |

There were some good traditional restaurants down this road. |
