Images from Copenhagen, 2001

The architecture of Copenhagen is a cool mixture of modern and medieval. There is some good 18th and 19th century architecture in the city, but after having just come from Vienna it all seemed a bit prosaic. The first time I was in town, I focused mostly on the modern structures, which are some of the best examples of modern architecture I've seen.

Copenhagen Rådhus (city hall), shrouded in mist.
The "Black Diamond," Copenhagen's new public library. Most Danes I talked to thought it was a monstrosity. I thought it was gorgeous.

The Black Diamond. I find myself transported, sometimes, by the perfection of geometry in good modern architecture.
A gull, reflected in the face of the Black Diamond.
The interior of the Black Diamond, looking towards the front of the building.
Another view of the Black Diamond's interior..
This is a bit of semi-baroque architecture which I actually liked. The centre aisle of Copenhagen's legal library, shot from the upper floor.
My colleagues in Rådhuspladsen, Copenhagen's central square.
