Images from Budapest, 2001/2002

Cecilie and I took a return trip to Budapest over the Christmas break and New Years, 2002. The city's charm hadn't changed at all in the year we'd been away. We saw theatre and went barhopping, and spent the week swirling in a milleu of city lights, centuries-old architecture, spicy food, "Bull's Blood" wine and gin & tonics.

On New Year's, Marton took us to a huge underground techno party. Literally underground because it was held in the labyrinth underneath a huge medeival fortress which overlooks the Danube. There was maybe 2,000 screaming ravers in there, dancing among the twisting passageways and halls, now bursting with blue light and trance music.

The Danube River, rolling its way southward through the centre of Budapest.

The courtyard of the apartment block where Marton had arranged for us to stay.
Night view of the monument at Heroes' Square, with the nearly full moon just to the right of the central pillar.
Statues of the Heroes' Square monument, depicting the major figures from Hungary's history.
Closer view of one of the statues. The document in the statue's hand is the Hungarian equivalent of the Magna Carta.

Cafe Fatal. Great marketing here...
Gorgeous Budapest architecture.
