Images from Brussels, 2000

Brussels is a strange city. There is no apparent city planning whatsoever, so you can find modern glass and steel structures literally sticking out of the sides of Seventeenth Century baroque architecture. They say it takes a few years of living in the city before you start to like it, but once it has you, you don't want to leave. One good thing about Brussels is the food and drink. The cuisine is as delicious as Paris, but cheaper, and with larger portions. Of course, Belgium is the world capitol of beer (the Czechs might argue that). There are so many varieties, it would be impossible to try to sample a statistically significant number of them without turning into a raving alcoholic.

The ever-expanding number of flags of the member countries of NATO, in front of NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
An all-too familiar sight during reports of the 1999 bombing of Kosovo. The NATO symbol sculpture in front of Headquarters.
View of part of the Grand Place in the centre of Brussels. The photographs do not do the Grand Place justice- it is literally breathtaking when you first see it.
One of the spires of the Grand Place. It is impossible to walk far enough backwards within the courtyard to fit the whole structure in the frame of one photograph.
The European Parliament building in Brussels. The future seat of the United States of Europe? A good topic for late-night discussions over good Belgian beer.
