I had the coolest dream last night- I dreamt I was on the London tube, heading to visit William S. Burroughs at his house. As I was walking down a set of stairs in one of the tube stations, I saw a tall guy with tousled hair ahead of me who looked familiar. I caught up with him and it turned out to be William Gibson. I realized that since we were only one tube stop away from Burroughs's place, Gibson must be heading there too.
So I got his attention and said that I didn't know if he remembered me, but that we met once in San Francisco, and was he by chance on the way to visit Burroughs. He said he did remember me and that he was heading to Burroughs's house, so we traveled together the rest of the way, talking about what the future might look like. We got to Burroughs's house, and Burroughs appeared at the door let us in. Most of the house was underground and filled with books and old tools of different kinds. Burroughs was the same as he used to be- a crabby but endearing old guy with a foul mouth and a dry sense of humor. As he made us tea he explained about the forgotten ancestry of science fiction, a lot of writers I'd never heard of.
He and Gibson acted like old friends. As we sat in Burroughs's kitchen and sipped the tea, the two of them compared the writers' different techniques, and talked about the modern writers who were influenced by them.
Then I couldn't believe it, but Burroughs handed me a stack of his books that he'd just been describing, and told me "Here. Use these," in a way that made it seem he'd be disappointed if I didn't.
Sorry I've been in radio silence mode again lately. I've been buried under work since Seattle and have just begun the big moving project into my new apartment (I've had the keys to the place since New Years but have just been too busy to do anything about it).
Honestly, beginning to take down the wallpaper in my new place is one of the most pleasant things I've done in a while. That sounds sick I know, but it's not so bad to do something completely physical for a few hours in a row. Put some good music on and just turn the mind off for a while... it had a kind of Zen-like simplicity.
Anyway, I'll be spending all day tomorrow and the next day doing more of the same, so I'm sure I'll be sick of it by the time I'm finished!
Heh, biking home from work today I saw some kid had spray painted the grafitto on the wall "Smash Kapitism!" Cute.
I could smash a little Kapitism myself these days. Just got back from the States and I feel like someone kicked me in the head. The Twin Peaks thing was awesome but the work was just non-stop towards the end of the week. Then my flight was cancelled due to bad weather in Copenhagen, and took me two and a half days and four airplanes to get home. I know I shouldn't complain but I'm just exhausted.
I took a great video of the falls from Twin Peaks and I'd like to put it up, but I don't know how to edit the thing. I'm a Photoshop guy and haven't really explored the weird and wonderful world of video.
Any advice?
This is my first blog post from the stratosphere. Right now I'm 11,000 meters over the dark ice of the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap, a few hundred clicks north of Iceland. Scandinavian just installed wireless broadband on their transoceanic A340s, and it's pretty cool to be up here and be able to stay connected. Actually, in many ways it's a drag because the only rest I ever get is when I can sleep for a few hours away from the Internet and mobile phone on one of these planes, but I dig the technological elegance of it.
If I'd remembered to bring the connection info for my web server, I'd be able to take a picture (not much to see out there since it's gone dark outside). I'll upload something when I get back to DK.
Love you all.
It's been radio silence for the last couple of weeks because I've been completely buried at work. Yeah, happy new year to you too! Now I'm off to the airport for Seattle for a week. It'll be fun, especially the Twin Peaks thing, but I'm really disappointed that I'm going to be too busy and too broke to fly down and see the San Francisco crowd, or to visit Sam in Oregon or Deborah in Vancouver. Seems like such a waste to be "in the neighborhood" and not see friends.
Talk to everyone when I get back though. I love you all.
New Year's resolution: to stay the hell away from tequila from now on (ooh, my head!).
Oh yeah, and also to try to work less overtime this year.
